Did Somebody say...Drugs!

A minnie blog as I wait for the sun to rise…sorry, but there will be more.

5 years ago I was given fentanyl as pain relief, a powerful opioid that has wreaked havoc across America mainly thanks to Purdue Pharma causing untold numbers of people to become addicted to opioids through their unlawful, money driven marketing schemes. Their pill in question was Oxycontin. As Doctors massively over-prescribed this dangerous and highly addictive product patients quickly found that they needed more and more to keep the withdrawal effects at bay. The Doctors, many of whom received "bribes" from the Sales Teams, duly signed the prescriptions and Purdue Pharma released a double strength tablet… Some people discovered that if you crushed the tablet, therefore getting rid of its 'time release' properties you could get an instant hit of a drug more potent than morphine with a quantity meant to last 12 hours. Carnage ensued (and continues to...)

Today it's my turn. Oxycodone. Same tablet, (slightly) different name. Was it a ‘40’ an ‘80’ or some other strength? I don't know…I'll find out when my dealer turns up on the morning medicine round. Did I crush and snort it? No. Do I feel stoned? No. Am I in pain? No. It works! And for all those shouting “Watch out for your bowels…” I've been farting like a trooper so all is good so far.

I'm writing this section just after 2.00am on my first (and hopefully only) night on the ward. Sleep is looking unlikely as there is snoring and almost constant alarms going off around me. No problemo… I say I'm not stoned but the cocktail of chemicals inside me is doing a wonderful job of keeping the discomfort at bay and giving me a feeling of wellbeing. I'm quite happy tapping away on the tablet whilst keeping half an eye on England's crucial T20 World Cup cricket match against the West Indies (it's not going well currently.)

The worst thing that has happened to me in the last 12 hours is that my toes have popped out of the end of my compression socks whilst I was doing a little stretch and it feels a bit icky! Nurse…! I'm well aware that tomorrow I will have to move, probably walk (ooh…the chaffing of the stitches!) and possibly endure a 15 minute car journey along the terrible pot-holed roads of East Sussex  (longer, more comfortable routes are already being considered) but right now, am I bovvered…nah!
